Why Is Rio Celeste’s Water Turquoise?

One of the biggest mysteries surrounding Rio Celeste is its breathtaking turquoise-blue color. Many visitors believe the water contains minerals or volcanic pigments, but the real explanation is even more fascinating. According to scientific research, the river’s vibrant color is created naturally at Los Teñideros, where two crystal-clear streams merge inside Tenorio Volcano National Park.

When these rivers meet, tiny mineral particles—primarily aluminum, silicon, and oxygen—combine and grow large enough to scatter sunlight. This natural optical phenomenon reflects mostly blue wavelengths, giving the river its famous bright turquoise appearance. The water itself is naturally clear; it is the interaction between sunlight and these microscopic particles that creates the spectacular color visitors see.

Although this horseback riding tour does not enter Tenorio Volcano National Park, it gives you the rare opportunity to experience the beautiful waters of the Celeste River from a different perspective. You’ll ride through tropical rainforest, observe local wildlife, and even enjoy a refreshing swim in sections of the river where swimming is permitted—an experience that is not allowed inside the national park.

This extraordinary natural phenomenon has made Rio Celeste one of Costa Rica’s most iconic natural attractions and a must-visit destination for nature lovers, photographers, and eco-travelers seeking unforgettable rainforest experiences.

Dream horse ride to Rio Celeste

Alfonso and his quiet well trained horses took us safely through the jungle across the river a few times, all the way to a well appointed campground beside a soccer field. We took a break under the shelter with a snack of fruits. He had water to wash our hands with or drink if we got thirsty. Our helmets kept the jungle out of our hair. After our swim in the blue waters of Rio Celeste, we rode back to the stables, where one more surprise local fruit was offered. The whole experience was incredible!
